The Victorian Lyric Opera Co. presents Foggerty’s Fairy, a play written over a century ago by W.S. Gilbert. The plot revolves around Frederick Foggerty, greatly portrayed by Frederick DuPuy. When a woman from his past ruins his engagement, Foggerty wishes that he could obliterate her from his life. However, with that wish come consequences that he is not prepared for.
The set is richly detailed with elegant furniture, crystal glasses, and an intricately iced cake. The costumes are also elaborate, with beautiful Victorian dresses and suits. Real food and drink are consumed as props, instead of mimed. This is all very unusual for a Fringe production, and only when the Fairy Rebecca appears, played by Casey Keeler, does the element of Fringe shine through. Wearing striped purple tights, roller skates, and glittery wings, Rebecca grants Foggerty his wish, and scrambles all the circumstances of his life as a result.
The acting is superb! The plot is full of amusing confusions and misunderstandings that will leave you smiling. Overall, a high-quality production that is worth your attention.
