You know who’s in the house? God is in the house! “Altar Boyz,” a super cute, high-energy musical comedy is bringing laughs, life lessons and the word of the Lord to the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre this season. Conceived by Mark Kressler and Ken Davenport with book by Kevin Del Aguila, the live concert-style show, à la Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, follows a happy-go-lucky Christian boy band from Ohio on a mission to entertain the masses and save souls one heathen at a time.
‘Altar Boyz’ is a show you may not be sure about at first but you will no doubt feel good after going.
The light-hearted production, directed by Mark Briner with musical direction by Ken Kimble and choreography by Becca Vourvoulas, commands attention from the get-go with relatable characters, catchy tunes and smooth dance moves to match.
The Boyz are an adorable bunch with dreamy Jamie Jacobs doing a fabulous job as the heartthrob and frontman Matthew, Angel Duque brings sweetness to the sensitive Mark, Ben Heemstra cracking everyone up as the not so bad boy Luke, Michael Parks as the passionate Juan and Zach Husak as Abraham, the talented, beatboxing Jewish member of the group.
The quirky quintet belts out songs that seem like they belong in the Top 40 albeit with a Bible bent from the poppy “Rhythm In Me” to the more hip-hop driven “The Miracle Song” and the swoon-worthy ballad “Something About You,” all giving shout-outs and praise to JC—you know, Jesus Christ—along the way. The lyrics are clever zingers that touch on the secular, with each actor giving them edge and bringing them to life, attracting plenty of applause and chuckles, such as when Luke (Heemstra) sings “God put the rhythm in me so I can bust a move” or Matthew (Jacobs) admits “You make me want to wait” and “…this hurts me more than you” to one lucky girl he brings up on stage.
Mark (Duque) is a bundle of energy throughout, while the more chill Juan (Parks) and laid-back Abraham (Husak) are soulful in their solos. A few props from little lambs to crosses, and a ‘Soul Sensor,’ a simple contraption that counts the lost souls in the room, all add to the heavenly vibe.
“Altar Boyz” is a show you may not be sure about at first but you will no doubt feel good after going. So get your tix to the ‘Raise the Praise’ tour while the fellas are still in town. Peace be with you.
