Britain’s Best to Perform Britten, Mendelssohn and Haydn
Hailed as the leading British quartet of its generation, the Doric String Quartet makes its Baltimore metropolitan area debut on February 23 at 7 pm at the Horowitz Center’s Smith Theatre in a concert sponsored by Candlelight Concert Society, currently in its 46th season of bringing world-class chamber music to Columbia, Maryland. Masters of a broad range of repertoire, the Doric will offer a program that spans the development of this much-loved medium.
A highly decorated ensemble, the Doric has been awarded multiple distinctions on the international circuit, prominent among them a first-place finish in the 2008 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. In summarizing its performance at the Borciani Competition that same year, The Strand enthused, “The players moved together with absolute unanimity… I found their performance the most inventive, engaging, moving and beautiful.”
The Doric opens its program with Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat Major, No. 4, Op. 33. Reviews of Doric’s discs and performances are unanimous in acknowledging the quartet’s aptitude for the Austrian master. According to the UK’s Telegraph, “Haydn and the Doric are a perfect match… Unequivocally, these were performances of terrific panache and perception, seeming to get right under the skin of Haydn’s creative genius.”
Following Haydn is Britten’s String Quartet No. 3, Op. 94, his valedictory statement in this genre, and, after intermission, Mendelssohn’s buoyant String Quartet in E minor, Op. 44, No. 2, composed during a period of personal happiness and increasing international recognition and marked by Mendelssohn’s rhythmic vitality and melodic appeal.
The Doric String Quartet is guaranteed to please Candlelight concertgoers in this “perfect match” of performers and pieces. “On every level,” writes critic David Dryer of Aberdeen Chamber Music Concerts, “technical virtuosity, instrumental colour, interpretation and understanding of the music, yes – just sheer musicality, the Doric Quartet were fabulous. The best quartet ever heard? Well, I’m not going to argue with that!”
