If you love the blues, you cannot let this production pass you by. ‘Thunder’ is sure to remain etched into your heart for a long time to come.
Set in a sleepy Alabama town circa 1966, “Thunder” is a mythical tale about legendary blues guitarist, Jaguar Dupree and the musical legacy he left to his children, Glory and Jaguar Jr. Magical and enchanting, the story is filled with heart, humor, and hope, as each character reckons with the past in the hopes of creating a better tomorrow.
Written by Keith Glover, with music by Grammy award winner, Keb’ Mo,’ this musical is a blues tour de force, delivered by a cast brimming with vocal talent. Kelli Blackwell (Good Sister) delighted the audience with emotion-packed singing that effortlessly filled the theatre. Greg Watkins (Jaguar Dupree Sr/Dregster) and Bryan Jeffrey (Jaguar Dupree Jr) provided some of the evening’s most humorous moments, while also demonstrating power and passion in tunes such as, “Big Money” and “Hurt Somebody.” Clifton Walker III (Marvell Thunder) and Shayla Simmons (Glory Dupree) were particularly notable for their superb acting and renditions of duets, “See Through Me” and “That Ain’t Right.”
The set itself conjures a certain magic, draped in colorful lights, anchored by a tree perfectly suited to the other-worldly tale it oversees. While hidden, the musicians (guitars, keyboard, drums, and bass) are as essential to the story’s unfolding as the characters that fill the narrative. A talented group, they manage to strike the perfect balance, supporting but never overpowering the singers.
