It doesn’t really matter who you are – if you love all things Peter Pan, if you saw “Hook” with Robin Williams once or twice, if you love re-tellings of classic tales, or plays relating to mental health issues, or even if none of those apply to you – you will fall head over heels for “Neverlanding,” a solo show presented by playwright Amanda Zeitler and performed with intensity by Seth Rosenke.
I highly recommend that you do not miss the final performance of ‘Neverlanding’ now playing at Capital Fringe Festival.
Michael Darling is in the psych ward. Not for what you might think (did anyone say “Second star to the right…?”) but for a possible suicide attempt. In this heart-wrenching forty minute drama, Michael reconstructs and deconstructs our entire understanding of Neverland, Peter Pan, and the Darling siblings as he attempts to convince his psychiatrist that he’s not a threat to himself.
I don’t want to give spoilers because as each layer of the story reveals itself, you will be drawn deeper into Michael’s world until you find yourself crying with him through the tragedies of his life. Despite that, I wasn’t depressed as I left the theatre but rather filled with awe and appreciation for the one-man show I had just witnessed and I loved the carefully nuanced twists and turns of Zeitler’s re-interpretation of such a well-known tale.
I highly recommend that you do not miss the final performance of “Neverlanding” now playing at Capital Fringe Festival. The July 20th performance unfortunately experienced lighting difficulties but the producers carried on in a timely fashion so that theatre-goers did not miss subsequent Fringe shows and Rosenke put on such a strong performance that while the missing light cues would certainly have added to the ambiance of the show, they weren’t missed at all by the enraptured audience.
Running Time: 40 minutes with no intermission
Advisory: Discussion of suicide; realistic gunfire and explosive sound effects
“Neverlanding” presented by Amanda Zeitler plays through July 27, 2019 at Capital Fringe Festival. For more information, click here.
