COLUMBIA, MD, December 18, 2019. “The Poulenc Trio brought an intriguing and beautifully played program…urbane and sophisticated with near-effortless lightness and grace. The Poulenc Trio does its namesake
proud!” (Washington Post)
On this special evening they will perform dynamic, beautiful works spanning three centuries, from Rossini to Previn to a world premiere, in a rich and unique sound described as “polished loveliness” (Palm Beach Post) and “irrepressible sweetness.” (Washington Post)
For Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, a work originally commissioned by Benny Goodman who premiered it with Leonard Bernstein, Irina will be joined by clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein. Equally thrilling, we will be treated to the premiere of a new piece by composer Viet Cuong written for the Trio, which enthusiastically supports the work of
this talented young composer in consonance with their enduring commitment to commissioning, performing, and recording new works from living composers. Since its founding, the Trio has greatly expanded the repertoire available for the oboe, bassoon, and piano, with twenty-two new works written for and premiered by the ensemble. As an additional enticement, Mr. Cuong will be in the audience and will share with us his insights in a pre-concert lecture.
