“Poulenc Trio with Alexander Fiterstein, clarinet” will be performing at the Smith Theatre, at the Horowitz Center at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland on January 25, 2020, at 7:30 pm as part of the Candlelight Concert Society’s Season.
What makes this performance a special one that is a must for anyone who attends the CCS performances is that their own Artistic Director, Irina Kaplan Lande will perform as the pianist of “America’s best-known piano-wind trio.” Joining Ms. Lande will be CCS vice president, Bryan Young on bassoon. Austin Smith fills out the trio on the oboe.
The program features a world premiere piece by one of America’s most talented composers, Viet Cuong, who will be in the audience on the 25th.
This evening will be one concert goers should not miss.
The highlight of the evening will be “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” which was commissioned by Benny Goodman and premiered shortly after the composer, Francis Poulenc’s death at age 64. His death was so sudden that editors had to ascertain the identity of some notes and provide missing dynamics and articulations. Goodman and Leonard Bernstein premiered the piece at New York’s Carnegie Hall on April 10, 1963. The sonata has three movements, ‘Allegro Tristamente,’ ‘Romanza’ and ‘Allegro con Fuoco.’ For this performance, Lande on the piano will be joined by clarinetist, Alexander Fiterstein.
Filling out the program will be another Poulenc piece, “Trio” followed by Ginka’s “Trio Pathetique,” Previn’s “Trio” and Rossini’s “Fantasy on L’Italiana in Algieri.”
The Washington Post hailed the trio stating, “The Poulenc Trio brought an intriguing and beautifully played program…urbane and sophisticated with near-effortless lightness and grace. The Poulenc Trio does its namesake proud!”
There will be a pre-concert lecture at 6:30 pm with composer, Viet Cuong at the Smith Theatre.
