Maryland Theatre Guide reached out to more than 100 professional and community theatres, as well as performance venues, in our coverage region about their policies regarding the COVID-19 situation. Information is changing rapidly, and several of these companies got back to us prior to the prohibition on mass gatherings in Maryland announced on the afternoon of Thursday, March 12.
Regularly updated lists of cancellations in the Washington area can be found at these DCist and Washington City Paper links; a similar list for the Baltimore area is at this Baltimore Sun link.
If an event is canceled or postponed, please consider donating the cost of the ticket to the theatre company, or to the Actors Fund or another organization that supports theatre artists experiencing financial and/or healthcare hardship.

Adventure Theatre MTC, Glen Echo MD: Adventure Theatre MTC has cancelled its 2020 Spring Gala Step Out In Style fundraiser. “Programs at both Glen Echo Park and Wintergreen Plaza location are not affected and will continue as scheduled at this time.”
Encore Theater Company, Takoma MD: “With our open call for Next to Normal this weekend, we’ve been monitoring the CDC and local guidelines closely and making an effort to over-communicate with our actors about what to expect and the steps we’re taking to ensure their health. Above all, we’re encouraging them to stay home if they feel at all sick — which means we’re even more willing to consider video submissions in lieu of in-person auditions.”
Everyman Theatre, Baltimore MD: “All staff has been urged to stay home should they feel symptomatic in the least, and we urge our patrons to do the same. Your tickets will be honored on another day if you contact the box office prior to your performance time/date and let them know of your situation.”
Laurel Mill Playhouse, Laurel MD: “This is our final weekend of performances of Moonlight and Magnolias and it is business as usual. What better way to escape all the stress than to support local theatre?”
Little Theatre of Alexandria, Alexandria VA: “As you can imagine, the coronavirus outbreak is a major concern for all area theaters that rely on bringing together audiences, students, and volunteers.” The LTA Board of Governors is “committed to making LTA a healthy and fun place for everyone. We will remain vigilant and ask that you do the same.”
Monumental Theatre Company, Alexandria VA: Episcopal High School, where Monumental performs, “has decided to close the campus for the time being. Because of this, Head Over Heels will close on Monday, March 16. We are disappointed to not present our show for the full run, but fully support Episcopal’s measures to maintain the health of their students and faculty members.”
Quotidian Theatre, North Bethesda MD: “While Quotidian does not have a show currently running, our production of Ibsen’s Ghosts opens in April. … Our box office will be happy to work with you for tickets you may already have purchased, either by subscription or via other means.”
Reston Community Players, Reston VA: “This weekend, the two final performances of The Diary of Anne Frank are scheduled on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14. At this time, we plan to proceed with these performances as scheduled but will offer ticket exchanges and refunds to those who are feeling unwell or are uncomfortable attending.”
Studio Theatre, Washington DC: “Through the run of our current production, Pass Over, we’re relaxing our exchange procedure by eliminating exchange fees and will work with you to find a suitable alternative in available seating through April 12.”
Toby’s Dinner Theatre, Columbia MD: “Audiences are loving Kinky Boots and our performance schedule remains unchanged as we continue to provide you with the same quality entertainment you have come to expect. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and do all we can to protect you and our employees.”
Washington Stage Guild, Washington DC: “We will happily exchange already purchased tickets for a future performance.”
Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, Frederick MD: “As everyone else is, I’m sure, we’re following all of the updates and guidelines being put out by the relevant authorities, but at this time, we have no plans on altering our performance schedule.”
We Happy Few, Washington DC: “At this time, all performances of The Count of Monte Cristo will be happening as scheduled, but we will be closely watching the progression of the virus and adhering to recommendations from local health authorities. If our performance status changes, we will post information on our website, social media accounts, and send out emails to current ticket holders.”
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, Vienna VA: “Currently, all performances, programs and classes are proceeding as scheduled. We will be sending updates as news develops.”
