Washington, D.C. – GALA Hispanic Theatre, the premier Latinx theatre in the nation’s capital, celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with performances and other activities in the community. From an Art All Night event to a GALita presentation at the 2022 Theatre Week kickoff event, GALA will highlight the work of Latino artists and cultures, and will provide information about GALA programs and special discounts that make theatre more accessible to the community.

Fall Extended Opportunities Fair

Reina Avelar and Jocelyn López, Paso Nuevo members who are students at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School, will participate in the Fall External Opportunities Fair hosted by The College Office at the charter school. The Paso Nuevo students will share their experiences in participating in the Paso Nuevo program, GALA’s free after-school youth theater arts training program.
Historical Reenactment – Sylvia Méndez

GALA will present a 15-minute scene of its bilingual play for children La llamada de Sylvia Méndez: Separate Is Never Equal as part of the museum’s initiative to highlight Hispanic figures during Hispanic Heritage Month. Written by Cornelia Cody and directed by Elena Velasco, the tells the story of how eight-year-old Sylvia Méndez became the face of the controversial Méndez v. Westminster case that
desegregated schools in California in the 1940s, benefiting thousands of Hispanic children and paving the way for school integration in the US. Méndez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Barack Obama for her advocacy for educational opportunity for “children of all backgrounds and all walks of life.”

For REVOLTOSA and FLAMENCO MEN, regular tickets are $48 Thursday through Sunday. Senior tickets (65+), Student, Teacher, and Military tickets are $35. Groups (10+) are $35 and Student Under 25 tickets are $25.
For LA LLAMADA DE SYLVIA MÉNDEZ: SEPARATE IS NEVER EQUAL, general admission tickets are $10 (Children) and $12 (Adults).

GALA has 4 wheelchair accessible spaces and an elevator to transport people from the entrance to the lobby, and to the house. Parking is available at a discounted rate in the Giant garage on Park Road, NW. Additional parking is available at the Target garage also on Park Road NW, between 14th and 16th Street NW. GALA is located one block north from Columbia Heights Metro station (Green/Yellow lines).
