“Company” was created in a collaboration between Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and George Furth (book). It was first performed in March of 1970 and has since been produced a countless number of times across the United States and beyond. Silver Spring Stage’s production will leave you laughing and thoughtful in the same breath, all backed by a stellar score.

The entire cast did a fantastic job portraying these interesting and funny characters in a lively and harmonious manner. William Lewis plays Bobby who is single, about to be 35, and is questioning why, unlike all of his friends, he’s still not married. Lewis’ performance was filled with emotion, especially in his signature song, “Being Alive.” Marissa Liotta was also a stand-out in her portrayal of Amy, a neurotic woman who unintentionally hurts her fiancé, Paul (Alan Gonzalez-Bisnes) in a frantic attempt to delay her wedding day. Liotta’s frantic pace in “Getting Married Today” was as impressive as it was catchy, the bleeding insecurity and mercurial moods of her character coming through beautifully. Tanya Coyne as Sarah was delightfully funny, her many exaggerated expressions and movements creating hilarious moments on stage, particularly in the scene in which she and her husband (the talented Brian Lyons-Burke) bond by fighting each other using karate.
Director Matt J. Bannister did an excellent job creating a surreal landscape in which the actors play. The texture of Bobby’s mind is one woven intrinsically into the fabric of New York City, and this production transports the audience there. Music Director Matthew Dohm created a beautiful soundscape in coordination with Sound Designer Matthew Datcher. The musical flourished in the many intricacies of each song, which were subtly and thoughtfully brought to life.
Silver Spring Stage’s production of “Company” is introspective, funny, and moving. It is a riotous time that questions the nature of marriage, getting older, and what it means to be in good company.
