“Kevin Kling: Unraveled” might just as well be titled “Kevin Kling: Unrivaled” as a more accurate reflection of the remarkably resilient Mr. Kling. His ability to thrive through adversity powers the stories in this moving production based on the life and times of the playwright and performer.
…moving production…a tour de force…
At the outset, one gets the distinct feeling that Kling is aware of the world’s need for hope and humor. His response is to invite the audience to accompany him on a journey into his past, where he examines the events and people who profoundly affected him, dispensing wisdom and insight along the way. Life is not always kind to Kling, but within his masterfully woven stories is a powerful drive to overcome obstacles, reframe events, and stir up some joy in those around him.
A two-man production, Kling is joined by musician Robertson Witmer who operates as a one-man band, contributing musical commentary on the keyboard, recorder, and accordion. The two actors join forces to close out the show with an exuberant vocal rendition of David Bowie’s “Heroes.”
Scenic Designer David M. Barber establishes a night-sky backdrop and covers it with photographs and mementos that find their way into Kling’s stories. The lines emanating outward from a circle that dominates the set seems to echo Kling’s message that experience, memory, and relationships are interconnected, with a global and timeless power.
“Kevin Kling: Unraveled” is destined for a bright future, rightfully characterized as a tour de force. If you’re fortunate enough to see this play, you might just leave the theater with a little more courage, a little more hope, and a lot more joy.
