    Audition for VLOC’s spring production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance!’

    **All roles are open and unpaid**

    Friday, October 18, 7-10pm
    Saturday, October 19, 7-10pm

    The Pirate King – Baritone – swashbuckling, athletic, sentimental, romantic, shirt open with the wind in his hair, Errol Flynn type. (Physical note: comfortable and able to swing on a rope).
    Mabel – Coloratura Soprano – plucky, resourceful, adventurous, smart, sweet and funny, think Katharine Hepburn. (Intimacy note: hugging and kissing required).
    Frederic – Tenor – earnest, genuine, passionate, romantic, honorable, everyman, Jimmy Stewart type. (Intimacy note: hugging and kissing required).
    Major General Stanley – Baritone – dignified, respectable, disciplined, yet warm and humorous, like Claude Rains
    Ruth – Contralto – quirky, “old and gray at 47” yet a sassy sidekick, like Thelma Ritter or Betty Garrett
    Sergeant of Police – Bass – lawful and dutiful, and adorably cowardly, think Charlie Chaplin
    Samuel – Baritone – simple, the epitome of the right-hand-man to the Pirate King
    Edith – Soprano – fun-loving ward of Major-General Stanley
    Kate – Mezzo-soprano – fun-loving ward of Major-General Stanley
    Isabel – Soprano – fun-loving ward of Major-General Stanley
    Chorus of Daughters – Altos and Sopranos – the more vivid and individual each one is, the better, comedic understanding and basic dancing ability required
    Chorus of Pirates – Baritones and Tenors – simple, tender-hearted souls, requires basic dancing and comedic understanding
    Chorus of Policemen – Bass and Baritones – simple, tender-hearted souls, requires good dancing and comedic understanding

    First Rehearsal: Mon Nov 4
    Rehearsals: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Sat (weekdays 7-10pm) (Sat TBD)
    Tech Week (required): February 16-20

    February 21, 22, 28, 29, 2020 at 8pm
    February 23* & March 1 at 2pm

    The F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre
    Rockville Civic Center
    603 Edmonston Drive, Rockville, MD 20851

    *All roles will be required to dance in performance, both partnering and group numbers. Dance experience is preferred, but not required.
    *Principal roles will perform a cold reading from the script.
    *The roles of Mabel and Frederick will require kissing and hugging in the production, not at auditions.
    *The Pirate King should be agile and athletic enough to swing on a rope.
    *All roles will be asked to speak with English accent. Dialect coach will be provided.
    *Please DO NOT prepare audition material from the show.
