Is there a more goosebump-raising romantic song than Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's "Falling Slowly?" You might say yes, but then you might have to come to blows to defend that position against the song's legion of devotees. It did, after all, inspire an Oscar-winning movie, "Once", (also starring the real-life musical duo) and a multiple-Tony-winning Broadway musical. "Once" the musical is a poignant ode to love, longing and the power of art, and now it comes to the stage at Olney Theatre Center. A talented cast of actor-musicians play their own instruments as they bring to life Hansard and Irglova's bittersweet songs, and the beautiful story they inspired. [less-]

Fans of sad-sack comedy found a new hero to root for after seeing Robert Kelly's lovably lovelorn turn as Louie CK's brother on FX's "Louie". Onstage, the shiny-domed Kelly is no less self-deprecating, but amps up the energy with fast-talking riffs on life, relationships, food and everything in between. Cocky yet humble, his is a very specific strain of high-octane vulnerability that will leave you wanting to hug him as you try to recover from laughing uncontrollably. Try to restrain yourself as Kelly stops by Magooby's Joke House in Lutherville, where he is as likely to wax on the perils of traditional masculinity as he is to opine for green apples that taste like mac 'n' cheese. The Disney Channel original movie "High School Musical" was such a smash hit that it made the jump from the screen to the stage -- and now the Wildcats are coming to the Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater! Filled with songs, sizzle and plenty of school spirit, this production updates the timeless love story "Romeo and Juliet" to a modern day high school romance. Oil -- there’s no escaping the fact that it’s at the heart of modern life, powering the world to previously unimaginable heights. But one day that will end. Called “scorchingly ambitious,” ("The Guardian"), the innovative drama "Oil" traces the life of this transformative resource, from its first boom in 1889 to its inevitable demise in the not-too-distant-future -- all seen through the eyes of a single mother and her daughter. Across five separate but connected playlets, the duo spans the globe and decades, struggling to survive by any means necessary. Ella Hickson, a young playwright making waves in the U.K., tackles big ideas of feminism, imperialism and environmentalism in this genre-busting tale that makes its American premiere at Olney Theatre Center. Joe List began his comedy career in Boston in 2000, just weeks after graduating from high school. Since that time he has been featured on "The Late Show with David Letterman" as well as multiple appearances on "Conan." He’s featured in Season 2 of The Netflix Series "The Stand Ups." In 2015, List was a finalist on NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and had his own half-hour comedy special on Comedy Central. His albums "So Far No Good" and "Are You Mad at Me?" can be heard regularly on Sirius Radio. List is also the co-host of his own popular weekly podcast "Tuesdays with Stories." When not headlining comedy clubs all over North America, List is a regular at the Comedy Cellar in New York City. [less-]
