In Terry McKinstry’s ‘in-your-face ‘70 Million Tons’ – God – or should I say Goddess – is pissed at an arrogant, polluting non-recycling director – Billie – played with extreme obnoxiousness by Tracy Jones. Stephanie Williams plays God and boy can she roar!! She shakes the roof at Capital Hill Arts Workshop, and I was worried those shingles might come flying down.
But this angry deity has softened up a little and has been convinced by Ozie (get it? The Ozone Layer) to give these bad humans another chance to clean up the environmental mess they have caused. This annoying director and her cast have an hour to get their act together and make their surroundings – a black box theatre in an Off-Broadway theatre – environmentally friendly.
It’s all very silly but the show has an important message to tell. I spent many years working as an environmental paralegal trying to help clean up hazardous waste accidents and spillings – so I am always glad when a playwright tries to remind his/her audiences of the dangers of being apathetic about recycling and respecting our environment.
Kudos to Director/Producer/Lighting Crew member Christopher Tulley for doing such a good job wearing so many hats.
Playwright Terry McKinstry’s 70 Million Tons was workshopped and produced in NYC by the Looking Glass Theatre in 2010. It has great potential and I look forward to seeing it’s next inception in the future.
