The Morphine Diaries is a tragic story about a girl with Lyme disease, and an addiction to morphine. This production is uncomfortably honest about addiction, and faithfully shows the changes in the abuser’s personality and close relationships throughout their use; great acting through its unmistakable realism. The show blasts music as this girl sinks deeper into her addiction, forcing her pain and confusion onto the audience. The scene changes (and set changes, a hospital bed is moved around) are constructed to match the tempo of the music and the addict’s mind; they are frantic, confused, and terrifying. The morphine diaries is a difficult show to watch because it is uncomfortably, terrifyingly honest, but it is also a Must-See for those reasons.
