If you watch Minister Joel Osteen and his uplifitng motivational Sunday sermons at his Lakewood Church at the former Compaq Center in Houston, Texas where every Sunday there isn’t an empty seat in the 38,000 seat house, you’ll see a lot of the handsome and soft-spoken Joel in Ken Johnson and Laura Zam’s intense in-your-face performance. And right off the bat we are reminded that what we are about to see is not a play – it’s a talk.
And what a talk it is! With his hands outstretched, and jumping around the stage like The Energizer Bunny, Ken Johnson encourages the audience to ‘Jump right in!’ to open their minds and hearts, and to imagine that what they truly wish for may be outside the ‘ding dong door’, but it will take time to get it.
I don’t want to give away any more, but suffice to say that Laura Zam’s performance is a tour de force filled with humor and passion and fire and craziness. It’s a fun 60 minutes performed by a great solo performer. An hour may not be enough, but it surely flies by when you’re having so much fun.
Running time: One hour.
